God. Bless. America. Fergie, maybe the most American figure in the history of this great country, put on a performance that may go down in history as the single event that sparked the unity movement of the United States of America. In a time where people are using the National Anthem to make a political statement, who would have thought that Fergie would use it to bring the nation together as one again.

If there is one thing that people can come together and agree with one another on, it is a train wreck. It is like when there is a car accident in a neighborhood and everybody comes out of their houses in their robes and slippers to watch the aftermath. You may not like Karen from two houses down, but you will come outside and discuss the accident that unfolded right outside your doors. Fergie’s national anthem last night was that car accident. In real time, it made actual public members present smile.

The moral of this story is: Fergie brought together many members of the basketball community. And that is just what we caught on a single broadcast. Imagine the conversations people are having at their offices this Monday morning. A guy can finally break the ice with the cute girl from accounting with: “Hey did you see Fergie bomb last night? Pretty hilarious, right?” And she will say something like, “Yes I did, thanks for asking. Will you be my boyfriend for 5 years?” I think that’s how relationships go.

What made me laugh at the end of this was the look on Fergie’s face. It looked like she has never been more proud of herself in her life. She looked out on all of those smiling faces I listed above and thought, “Ya killed it Ferg. You are an American legend.”

Thank you, Fergie. You are not the hero we deserve, but you are the hero we need.
